Media Release: UK-based African Banker Magazine awards Governor Rameswurlall Basant Roi, G.C.S.K., the Central Bank Governor of the Year Award 2017 endorsed by the African Development Bank Group

The London-based African Banker Magazine, one of the most important media stakeholders in the banking and finance sectors across Africa, has conferred upon Governor Rameswurlall Basant Roi, G.C.S.K., the Central Bank Governor of the Year Award for 2017. This award is the third international accolade received this year by Governor Rameswurlall Basant Roi, G.C.S.K.

This Award, endorsed by the African Development Bank Group, recognises the central bank governor “who has successfully reformed and transformed the financial sector, through proper regulation and policies, as well as created a stable and predictable environment for investment and growth”. The decision to select Governor Rameswurlall Basant Roi, G.C.S.K., for this Award was reached through consultations with multilateral agencies, the editorial board of African Banker and other experts comprising bankers and business leaders known and respected for their expertise on the African banking and finance industry.

In a letter addressed to the Bank of Mauritius (Bank) on the 17th of May 2017, Omar Ben Yedder, Chairman of the Awards Committee, Group Publisher and Managing Director of the UK-based IC Publications Group, stated that the African Banker Awards Committee is paying tribute to Governor Rameswurlall Basant Roi’s “great leadership in successfully steering Mauritius’ finances and efficiently facing formidable economic challenges, both external and domestic”.

The African Banker Awards Committee has also emphasised on the fact that “the Central Bank of Mauritius has made important strides in advancing its agenda of institutional improvements” and that under Governor Rameswurlall Basant Roi’s “watch, the Bank’s commitments and unwavering efforts to build a stable, resilient and forward-looking financial jurisdiction have contributed to Mauritius’ economic growth”.

Through this Award, the African Banker stated that “Africa’s improved reputation today is in large part owed to the achievements of leaders like” Governor Rameswurlall Basant Roi, G.C.S.K., and that the accolade “wholeheartedly acknowledges your [Governor Rameswurlall Basant Roi’s] invaluable contribution to the political, economic and social development of the continent”.

Past recipients of the African Banker’s Central Bank Governor of the Year Award include Patrick Njoroge and Professor Njuguna Ndung’u (both from Kenya), Linah Mohohlo (Botswana), Mustapha Kamel Nabli (Tunisia) and Tito Mboweni (South Africa).

For Governor Rameswurlall Basant Roi, G.C.S.K., “this latest accolade is yet another testimony to the relevance of the bold reforms and strategies the Bank has adopted in the best interests of our jurisdiction”.  Governor Rameswurlall Basant Roi, G.C.S.K., dedicates this Award to the Board of Directors and the staff of the Bank.
