Issue of Commemorative Coins

  1. The Bank of Mauritius announces the issue as from 30 October 2009 of the ‘Father of the Nation’ Platinum coin Series to pay tribute to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam in laying the foundation stone of the Mauritian nation.
  2. The issue will consist of a series of three commemorative coins issued over a period of three years, one coin being issued each year, as follows:
    1.  First Year (in October 2009) – a coin depicting on the obverse State House, Reduit with the inscription “Rs1500” underneath and with the surrounding inscription “FATHER OF THE NATION PLATINUM SERIES*MAURITIUS 2009*STATE HOUSE-REDUIT*”.
    2. Second Year (in September 2010) – a coin depicting on the obverse Aapravasi Ghat with the inscription “Rs1200” underneath and with the surrounding inscription “FATHER OF THE NATION PLATINUM SERIES*MAURITIUS 2010*AAPRAVASI GHAT*”.
    3. Third Year (in September 2011) – a coin depicting on the obverse Le Morne Brabant with the inscription “Rs1200” underneath and with the surrounding inscription “FATHER OF THE NATION PLATINUM SERIES*MAURITIUS 2011*LE MORNE BRABANT*”.
  3. Each coin will bear on the reverse the effigy of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam with the surrounding inscription “DR THE RIGHT HONOURABLE SIR SEEWOOSAGUR RAMGOOLAM KT*”.
  4. A set of the three coins will be issued after the third year.
  5. The specifications of the coins are as follows:

  1. The coins will be minted by Monnaie de Paris, France.
  2. Each coin will be legal tender in accordance with section 37(1) of the Bank of Mauritius Act 2004 for the face value stated thereon.
