Public Notice: Caution against counterfeit banknotes

The Bank of Mauritius (Bank) wishes to alert members of the public to reports of counterfeit Mauritian banknotes in circulation.

Members of the public are advised to exercise vigilance when accepting or handling banknotes and to familiarise themselves with the security features incorporated in all genuine Mauritian banknotes. These features have been specifically designed to facilitate the identification of authentic banknotes.

Any person who suspects that a banknote may be counterfeit should refrain from accepting it and should immediately report the matter to the nearest police station.

The Bank further reminds the public that, under the Bank of Mauritius Act 2004, it is the sole issuer of Mauritian currency notes and coins. The Act also makes it an offence to possess counterfeit banknotes or, for any person other than the Bank, to issue Mauritius currency notes or coins.

The Bank remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of the national currency. In that regard, it is working closely with the Police and relevant authorities as well as with regulatees and stakeholders. The Bank will take all appropriate actions, in accordance with the provisions of the law, to combat counterfeiting.
