Public Notice: Courtesy meeting with a foreign bank

In light of media reports on the Bank of Africa, the Bank of Mauritius (“the Bank”) wishes to point out the following:

  1. On the 7th of April 2025, the then Second Deputy Governor, Mr. Gérard Sanspeur, organised a meeting between himself and foreign representatives of the Bank of Africa to be held at the Bank on the 18th of April 2025.
  1. On the 17th of April 2025, the Bank’s Governor, Dr. Rama Sithanen, held a courtesy meeting with a Regional CEO of the Bank of Africa.
  1. On the 18th of April 2025, as the Governor was out of the country, and as the then Second Deputy Governor failed to attend, without giving any reason, the meeting initially scheduled by himself, the First Deputy Governor, Mr. Rajeev Hasnah, in his capacity as Acting Governor, stepped in for the pre-planned courtesy meeting with the Regional CEO and Group CEO of the Bank of Africa.
  1. It is a common occurrence for the Bank to hold such courtesy meetings.
  1. On the 29th of April 2025, the Bank of Africa addressed a letter to the First Deputy Governor. The letter was subsequently unlawfully published.
  1. The Bank rejects all insinuations that it has failed in its duty of independence, impartiality and confidentiality in this matter.
