Good afternoon.
It is an honor and a privilege to welcome you to the launch of BOMStats, the new Statistical Data Platform of the Bank of Mauritius.
This event is taking place in a week which holds particular significance for our institution. Indeed, the Bank of Mauritius—our nation’s central bank—turned 59 just two days ago, on the first of September.
The launch of BOMStats marks an important milestone in our efforts to promote greater transparency, strengthen statistical governance, and embrace digitalisation.
BOMStats embodies our belief that reliable, timely, and accessible data supports better decisions across society.
It helps households, businesses, researchers, and policymakers to assess economic conditions, understand risks, and plan.
For a central bank, data is vital to sound policy. It supports the assessment of inflation, financial stability, external vulnerabilities, and payment system resilience. It also helps strengthen communication and institutional accountability.
BOMStats will serve as a central point of reference for the monetary, financial, external sector and payment statistics compiled by the Bank of Mauritius. A substantial portion of the data currently published in the Bank’s Monthly Statistical Bulletin is already reflected in the platform, making it a practical gateway to the statistics most frequently used by our stakeholders.
Through an intuitive interface, interactive dashboards and downloadable time series, BOMStats will make information easier to find, interpret, and use.
The Bank will continue to expand the portal over time, further enhancing transparency and supporting evidence-based analysis and informed public debate.
The adherence in March 2026 of Mauritius to the Special Data Dissemination Standard Plus, the highest tier of the IMF’s Data Standards Initiative, underscored our country’s commitment to data quality, timeliness, integrity, and transparency.
BOMStats gives practical effect to that commitment. It is built on the African Development Bank’s Open Data Platform and is supported by the adoption of Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange, or SDMx, a trusted global standard for official statistics.
BOMStats thus strengthens interoperability and enables data and metadata sharing in a structured, standardised, and machine-readable manner. This will improve reporting to international organisations, enhance consistency across data-producing agencies, and help users retrieve, compare, and reuse information with greater confidence.
I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the Honourable Prime Minister for his leadership and commitment to strengthening the credibility of our statistical system. I also acknowledge the close collaboration among the Ministry of Finance, Statistics Mauritius, and the Bank of Mauritius in advancing this important national agenda.
My thanks go as well to the International Monetary Fund and the African Development Bank for their valuable technical support, and to the dedicated teams of the Bank of Mauritius who have worked with diligence and commitment to bring this platform to life.
Ladies and gentlemen, as the Bank marks its 59 years of existence, allow me to end with a tribute to the Boards, Governors, Managing Directors, Deputy Governors, and staff teams—past and present—who made it their resolve to contribute to building a central bank capable of adapting to shifts, transformations, and crises.
BOMStats is one of many reminders that the next 59 years will look dramatically different but that the mission of the Central Bank endures: to always be at the service of Mauritius.
